Some Of These Days (Shelton Brooks) 1910Listen to a sample of this song.
Written by Shelton Brooks, a black vaudeville performer and songwriter wrote some of the most popular songs of the 1910s. Some Of These Days, along with his other biggest hit, The Darktown Strutters’ Ball (1917), became an instant vaudeville standard. The song was made popular by Sophie Tucker, known as “the last of the red hot mamas”, who made it her theme song. She also titled her autobiography after it and recorded it four times, beginning in 1911. Some Of These Days has been widely recorded, from Jazz greats such as Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Django Reinhardt and Coleman Hawkins, to Milton Brown’s Western Swing band, who also recorded The Darktown Strutters’ Ball. Jazz musicians enjoyed improvising on its refrain with its multiple chord changes and modulations between major and minor modes. Most recordings of the song, including this one, are only of the refrain, with the somewhat corny verse eliminated.
