That Brown Skin Gal

Listen to a sample of this song.

Recorded as There’s A Brown Skin Girl Down The Road Somewhere by the legendary fiddler from Amarillo, Texas, Eck Robertson, it was also recorded in 1940 by Bob Wills during the same session that produced his biggest hit, New San Antonio Rose. Robertson’s version includes a third theme in a different key, making it sound more like a rag than a fiddle tune. Robertson was known throughout west Texas as a champion fiddler and his chief rival was John Wills, father of Bob Wills. Robertson also performed on radio station WPAB in Fort Worth, the same station on which Bob Wills performed at the start of his career with the Light Crust Doughboys. Bob Wills recorded this Blues and Jazz influenced fiddle tune several times throughout his career and it was the last tune he recorded as a fiddler.
