Some will know this as a Beatles song, others as a Carl Perkins song, which is where the Beatles got their version. However, this version is based on a recording by Roy Newman and His Boys, which is where Carl Perkins no doubt heard it. Like Bill Boyd , Roy Newman wasn’t known as a live performer but was mainly a studio musician and radio performer. Newman was a pianist, however, he rarely took a solo on his recordings, preferring to provide a solid rhythm instead. “Newman demonstrated a remarkable talent for finding superb musicians…..they produced an infectious dance music which revealed little indebtedness to country music and much to blues and New Orleans Jazz” (Malone, p. 168). Like most other Western Swing musicians, Roy Newman considered himself a Jazz musician and not a Country musician, however, his high-pitched nasal singing is definitely in the Country music tradition.
